Four-Block Problem Solving

Problem solving is a school-wide focus in our math classes. Every class in our school uses a four-block problem solving template to break down more complex math problems so that students find the problems easier to understand, know what is required, and are able to answer exactly what the question is asking.

The first block in the template requires students to write down what the question has told them and what the question is asking (understand the question).

The second block requires students to make a plan. How exactly are they going to get the information they require? There are some choices for students to circle (e.g., make a chart, pictures, number line, etc.). Students are always welcome to write a different strategy for solving the problem in this block.

In the third block, students actually carry out the plan. They do their calculations, pictures, in order to solve the problem.

In the fourth block they answer the question.

We have found that using this template has helped students across the grades to break down problems and answer exactly what the question is asking. This is typically a task that is more difficult for children. I have a attached a copy of the four-block math template below.
