Wow! What a busy month it has been!
We have just returned from an amazing trip to Kandalore, where students participated in all kinds of activities including: high ropes, archery, orienteering, nature hikes, canoeing, indoor rock climbing, mountain biking and Inuit blanket toss. I was so impressed by the courage everyone demonstrated by trying new things beyond their comfort zone! It was so nice to see fellow classmates encouraging and helping one another and cheering for their friends. We have such a nice group of grade 6 students!
In the classroom, this month has been a busy one!
In language, we have worked on writing mini autobiography flip books. Students wrote about themselves in first person, under five categories: Birth, Family, School, Hobbies/Interests, Favourites, and Future Goals. On Monday, we will review the format for recount writing, and write a recount based on our trip to Camp Kandalore. After this, we will move on to narrative writing, just in time to write spooky (not scary) Halloween narratives!
This month, we began reading our class novel, The City of Ember, by Jean DuPrau. It is an excellent book! We hope to finish this book by the end of October.
In math, we have just finished our unit on place value. The curriculum expectation for grade 6 is to name, order, and compare whole numbers to the million place value. Our students did very well with this! Place value tests have been marked and will go home this week. Our next mini-unit is on factors and multiples, as this is a good lead up to multiplication. I will always try my best to post many of our lessons and activities in Google Slides format on Google Classroom, so students have a chance to preview the lesson before class (if they wish). It is also a good way to review for end of unit assessments.
In science, we are studying electricity. This unit is an excellent accompaniment to our class novel, the City of Ember. At the end of our science unit, we will actually design and build the City of Ember, and create circuits with batteries, copper wire and light bulbs to light up the city!
In social studies, we are examining the experiences of different cultural groups upon their arrival to Canada. We are also looking at the experiences of different First Nations People in Canada.
As you can see, September has been very busy! We are looking forward to a fantastic October!
The class calendar is attached below. You can also find it in the Calendars and Newsletters section of this blog and the Google Classroom. Students will also be given a paper copy of the calendar on Monday.
