Dear Grade 6 Families,
I’m looking forward to getting to know all of the special, unique, and talented students in our grade 6 class. To celebrate our students, we will be starting a “Student of the Week” project in our class. Each week, one special member of our class will be celebrated for their uniqueness and importance to our class. The goal is for everyone to have a chance to shine and share with the class their interests, talents, and everything that makes them who they are! Look at the monthly calendar to see when your child is scheduled to be Student of the Week!
The Friday before your child is the Student of the Week, he/she will be sent home with the following items that will need to be returned to class:
• Student of the week envelope with detailed information
• Student of the Week poster (also attached below)
• Art Supplies: crayons, markers
• Folder with Parent Letter
While your son/daughter is the Student of the Week, each day we will have a special activity to honour him or her.
Monday: My Big Interesting World
We would like to know all about your child. Please help your child collect 2 – 3 special items from home with which to fill a small bag that we will refer to as a “wonder bag”. He or she will share the items with the classmates and explain why they are special.
Tuesday: Poster Share
The Student of the Week will complete the All About Me poster.
He or she is also welcome to share approximately 5 pictures that show important/fun/significant times in his or her life. The pictures can be hard copies or digital though Google Drive.
Wednesday: Favorite Book
The Student of the Week will need to bring one of his or her favorite books to discuss with the class and present a short book talk on this book (book talk sheet is attached). He or she should be prepared to explain WHY it is a favourite.
Thursday: Parent Letter
Parents, please write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Let us know what makes your child so special. Tell us about his/her likes and dislikes. Share your child’s special interests and skills. Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter to the class. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from one of the following ideas:
• Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear.
• Write a silly or serious poem about your child
• Tell us some neat things we may not know about your child
• Send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures
Friday: Friendship Book
Your Student of the Week will be presented with a friendship book created by his or her classmates. The friendship book will include letters written to your child by his or her classmates.
Thank you for your help with this project. Below you will find a schedule for when each person in our class will be the Student of the Week. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about the exciting upcoming weeks!
